The United Auto Workers union faces the latest test of its ambitious plan to unionize auto plants in the historically nonunion South when a vote ends at two Mercedes-Benz factories near Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The voting Friday at an assembly plant and a battery-making facility comes a month after the UAW scored a breakthrough victory at Volkswagen’s assembly factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In that election, VW workers voted overwhelmingly to join the union, drawn by the prospect of substantially higher wages and other benefits. The UAW had little success before then recruiting at nonunion auto plants in the South.

Xander Schauffele has set the PGA Championship record with a 62. He also ties a major championship record that he shared last year in the U.S. Open. Schauffele took advantage of rain-softened conditions at Valhalla. And he's been playing some good golf. Schauffele was runner-up last week in the Wells Fargo Championship. Schauffele played the back nine in 31. He ran off three birdies in a four-hole stretch on the front nine to get in range of the record. The previous mark at the PGA was a 63. One of those was Jose Maria Olazabal at Valhalla 10 years ago.

An upside-down American flag was displayed outside the home of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito in January 2021, The New York Times reports. It's a symbol associated with former President Donald Trump’s false claims of election fraud. The Times reported Thursday that it was seen flying on Jan. 17, 2021, days after Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The newspaper published a photo it obtained of the flag. Dozens of the rioters were carrying similarly inverted flags while chanting slogans like “Stop the Steal.” The report comes as the high court considers two major cases related to the attack, including charges faced by the rioters and whether Trump has immunity from prosecution on election interference charges.

Five Americans are facing prison sentences of up to 12 years in the Turks and Caicos Islands on charges they illegally carried ammunition while in the popular, upscale tourist destination about 600 miles southeast of Miami. Three of the arrests have prompted pleas for mercy from the governors of Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Virginia. In a letter Tuesday to the islands’ governor, they said the three men charged from their states maintained they inadvertently took ammunition with them on vacation. They did not have firearms. The British territory significantly tightened its gun laws in 2022 following a jump in gun violence and weapons trafficking.

A major North Carolina political donor and his associate have been convicted a second time of attempting to bribe the state's insurance commissioner to secure preferential regulatory treatment for his insurance business. Insurance magnate Greg Lindberg and former consultant John Gray were convicted Wednesday of bribery concerning programs receiving federal funds and conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud. Both were convicted of the same crimes in 2020, but an appeals court ordered new trials declaring that the trial judge erred in his jury instructions. Before the indictment, Lindberg had given millions of dollars to North Carolina candidate and party committees and independent expenditure groups.

Google is asking that a federal judge, rather than a jury, decide whether it violated U.S. antitrust laws by building a monopoly on the technology that powers online advertising. To bolster its case, the tech giant said Thursday in a court filing it wrote a multimillion-dollar check to the U.S. government that Google says moots the government’s best argument for demanding a jury trial. The antitrust case currently set to go before a jury in Virginia in September is one of two major lawsuits the Justice Department has brought against Google. The Virginia case focuses on advertising technology, an ongoing case in the District of Columbia focuses on Google’s dominance as a search engine.
